Ozamiz Preservation: A Resistant to Change

"Nothing is constant in this world but only change". Have you ever wondered why we came to this point which is very different from our past condition? Did you ever ask why many changes occur? Despite these changes, are there still things which remained the same and was able to preserve its natural and aesthetic beauty, feature and purpose?

Well, these questions can be simply answered by yes or no. But let's try to go to its deeper sense. What happened? Why did it happen? How did it happen?

Ozamiz City is known to be one of the historical places in the Philippines. It is known for its historical features, ecological landmarks, and admirable culture. Many years have passed, and many changes already evolve in the city - more buildings, more houses, more establishments, more vehicles, more schools, hospitals and more people. All these showed that Ozamiz City is a developing one. However, although the city had much of it, some things remained. Some things were preserved.

Talking about Cotta Fort, it stands as one of the oldest structures in the city. It was built way back 1756 by Father Jose Ducos and served as a Spanish outpost before. It is made up of sea corals.  Due to an intensity 7 earthquake in 1955, it has left a very great destruction to the fort's structure. However, in 2006, in the leadership of former Mayor Reynaldo "Aldong" O. Parojinog, the fort was renovated and was again opened to the public. Although it was renovated, its original structure was preserved. Until now, many tourists was able to appreciate its unique beauty and architecture. Developing ones heritage site is quiet an easy thing to do. The challenge is not on the process of development itself, rather, on the process of maintaining the preservation made by the government which will involve a cooperative action from the Ozamiznons.

Preservation doesn't only deal with the physical aspect, it has also something to do with the inner one. I am actually referring to the characteristics of the Ozamiznons. Ozamiznons are such active  and participative people. This is being proven during city charter days, special holidays, big city events and religious events. Eversince before, many years have passed by, they were like this. During pageants, competitions, festivals, parties and gatherings, Ozamiznons are of complete attendance. The event venue is filled with lots of people. Not only that! But, they are also present on big activities in the Church such as Aguinaldo Masses, Lenten Season, fiestas of Patron saints, processions and other pilgrimage. With their strong faith, they dedicated themselves fully to the activities. That's what makes the Ozamiznons very ideal not only to the other Filipinos but also to the tourists.

It is really very inspiring to know that we, Ozamiznons, possess these values. It brings confidence to all and increases our self-worth.

I am challenging all Ozamiznons to maintain those values and introduce it to the younger ones - the next generations, in order for it to be sustained as time goes by. Be an role model to them. And be an instrument to build a better image and better lives!!! =D
